Breast Cancer Awareness Does Not End October 31; LivingConversations.com Builds Online Community for Survivors
November 19th, 2007
2007 NOV 19 -- Breast cancer awareness month has ended, but for many affected by the disease, the celebration of survival lasts longer than 31 days. A new video website, LivingConversations.com, designed to build a community of strength for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients and provide the latest news in breast cancer information and research was the subject of a recent profile by Anne Thompson on NBC's Today Show. LivingConversations.com is an online community with user-contributed content devoted to life, living and the power of survival for all women affected by breast cancer. Conceived and developed by Karen Webster, LivingConversations.com aims to provide a forum for women's stories and a support network for cancer patients and survivors. The site's mission is to build and empower a community for women to share personal stories of their life as survivors on the other side of breast cancer. "Celebrating survival does not end October 31 for those affected by breast cancer," said Webster, a five-year survivor. "LivingConversations.com provides a community where women of various ages, ethnicities and backgrounds gather together on video to offer hope and courage to the many women, family members and network of supporters affected by this disease. I found that listening to other survivors was a great comfort and inspiration throughout my own journey." Two years after her own treatment ended, Webster's mother finally ended her silence and told her that she, too, had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Initially fearful of treatment and not knowing of anyone who survived the disease, her mother found the courage to seek help after seeing her daughter's survival. Through LivingConversations.com, Webster hopes to share the gift of survival with other women and let them know that life on the other side of cancer can be as enriching as those of the women whose stories are on the site. LivingConversations.com also provides information on trusted places to seek information on breast cancer as well as support groups that helped Webster through her recovery. A research section allows visitors to keep track of the latest findings and Webster's blog responds to breast cancer- related news and issues. Women who would like to share their survival stories are invited to submit them via video or text.
