Stakeholders Gather to Share Nursing Home Quality Improvement Strategies

December 10th, 2007

2007 DEC 10 -- More than 200 quality improvement organizations, nursing home associations, consumers, ombudsmen, federal and state officials and quality improvement experts gathered today in Fort Worth to chart a course for quality improvement in nursing homes. This unprecedented coalition of stakeholders who are committed to improving quality care in nursing homes have come together to celebrate their year-old campaign, build and sustain collaborations and share their successes.

The participants are all part of Advancing Excellence in America's Nursing Homes, a national campaign dedicated to improving the quality of care and quality of life for the 1.5 million living or recuperating in America's nursing homes. Support for participating nursing homes and consumers comes from state coalitions called LANEs (Local Area Networks for Excellence). The LANE serves as the central organization to ensure the success of the campaign for each state.

Launched in Sept. 2006, the Advancing Excellence initiative is a two year, coalition-based campaign concerned with how we care for elderly and disabled citizens. This voluntary campaign monitors key indicators of nursing home care quality, promotes excellence in caregiving for nursing home residents and acknowledges the critical role nursing home staff has in providing care. The campaign is focusing on eight quality goals such as reducing pressure ulcers and the use of restraints, assessing the satisfaction of residents and their families about the care being delivered and improving staff retention and the relationships between consumers and staff.

"The Advancing Excellence in America's Nursing Homes Campaign gives nursing home residents and their families a greater opportunity to define what they see as quality and how they expect nursing homes to provide that quality," said Mary Jane Koren, Assistant Vice President, The Commonwealth Fund and incoming chair of the Advancing Excellence Steering Committee. ""The Advancing Excellence Local Area Networks for Excellence (LANES) are creating the infrastructure to facilitate these local level achievements. People who want to help improve nursing home quality can work through their LANE to help."
