Study findings from A. Rohani et al provide new insights into dengue fever

2009 JUL 20 - (NewsRx.com) -- "In this study, artificial membrane feeding technique was used to orally feed Aedes aegypti with dengue and chikungunya viruses," scientists writing in the Southeast Asian Journal of Tropical Medicine and Public Health report.

"Virus detection was carried out by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. The study did not detect dual infection of Ae. aegypti with dengue and chikungunya virus from the same pool or from individual mosquitoes," wrote A. Rohani and colleagues.

The researchers concluded: "Oral receptivity of Ae. aegypti to chikungunya virus was higher than that of dengue virus.."

Rohani and colleagues published their study in Southeast Asian Journal of Tropical Medicine and Public Health (REFRACTORINESS OF AEDES AEGYPTI (LINNAEUS) TO DUAL INFECTION WITH DENGUE AND CHIKUNGUNYA VIRUS. Southeast Asian Journal of Tropical Medicine and Public Health, 2009;40(3):443-448).

Additional information can be obtained by contacting A. Rohani, Institute Med Research, Infectious Disease Research Center, Medical Entomology Unit, Kuala Lumpur 50588, Malaysia.
