American College of Chest Physicians Names New CEO

2009 AUG 25 - (NewsRx.com) -- The American College of Chest Physicians announced that its Board of Regents has named Paul A. Markowski, CAE, as the new Executive Vice President and CEO for the international medical specialty society. Mr. Markowski will succeed Alvin Lever, FCCP(Hon), as only the fourth EVP and CEO in the society's 75-year history.

"We are very excited to welcome the newest addition of the ACCP leadership team," said James. A. L. Mathers, Jr., M.D., FCCP, President of the ACCP. "Paul comes to the ACCP with a robust background in health-care advocacy, communications, and organizational management. The ACCP will undoubtedly benefit from his experience as we strive to further the College's mission and strategic edge in the health-care marketplace."

For the last 4 years, Mr. Markowski has been the Deputy Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at the American Academy of Otolaryngology -- Head and Neck Surgery. Prior to this position, he worked with the American Medical Association for 15 years, holding such positions as Director of Federation Relations and Advocacy Campaign Manager.

"I am truly honored to be only the fourth EVP and CEO of the ACCP in the last 75 years. I am excited about the opportunity and look forward to working with a dynamic, forward-thinking organization, led by leadership and staff committed to their professions."

Mr. Markowski, a longtime Chicago resident, received a business degree from Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI, and has attained his CAE (Certified Association Executive). He holds active memberships in the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) and the American Association of Medical Society Executives (AAMSE).

Mr. Markowski will join the ACCP on October 19 and officially become acting EVP and CEO on November 6, immediately following CHEST 2009, the ACCP's 75th annual meeting. His predecessor, Alvin Lever, will relinquish the position on November 5, after holding the CEO position for 18 years.

"For the last 18 years, Al Lever has served the College with passion and determination," said Dr. Mathers. "Under his stewardship, the ACCP has become recognized as the premier professional organization for practitioners of clinical chest medicine. We look forward to his continued consultation and support of the College and The CHEST Foundation during the transition process and beyond."

The ACCP will celebrate 75 Years of Inspiration during CHEST 2009, the ACCP's annual scientific meeting held in San Diego, October 31 to November 5. ACCP represents 17,400 members who provide patient care in the areas of pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine in the United States and throughout the world. The mission of the ACCP is to promote the prevention and treatment of diseases of the chest through leadership, education, research, and communication.
