Committee approves needle exchange, treatment funding

Legislation that would allow New Jersey municipalities to operate their own needle exchange programs was approved by an Assembly committee and $10 million was added to the measure for drug treatment programs.

The Assembly Appropriations Committee passed the legislation that had recently received approval from the Health and Human Services Committee.

New Jersey is one of two states that doesn't have a needle exchange program or a law allowing nonprescription sales of needles and syringes.

Democrats said that the $10 million was added to the legislation because of the need in the state for inpatient and residential substance abuse...
