HIV+ Patient Developed AIDS At Time of HHV-6 Coinfection

An asymptomatic patient with HIV infection had a dramatic drop in his CD4+ T-cell count and began to develop AIDS symptoms after acute infection with human herpesvirus type 6 (HHV-6).

The patient had been followed for six years by a Spanish research team investigating the possible role of HHV-6 as a cofactor in HIV disease.

M. Valle Blazquez and colleagues of the University of Cordoba, Spain, reported their findings in the August 1, 1995, issue of the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes and Human Retrovirology ("Human Herpesvirus-6 and the Course of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection," JAIDS, 1995;9(4):389-94).
