AIDS Research Evaluation Ordered

Federal health officials, hoping to find new ways to treat and prevent AIDS, are ordering a revaluation of the nation's research effort against HIV.

Dr. William E. Paul, director of the Office of AIDS Research at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), said he has appointed a committee of 12 scientists to evaluate the federal AIDS research effort and suggest improvements.

Paul said his agency also will encourage federal financing of research ideas generated from the university and private researchers. In the past, he said, the research emphasis at the NIH was on ideas generated by the agency's scientists and then contracted out to non-federal...
