Trials To Begin for Drug To Prevent Tuberculosis

Pharmacia Inc., Dublin, Ohio, announced the initiation of two clinical trials to determine the safety and efficacy of Mycobutin (rifabutin capsules) for the prevention of tuberculosis (TB).

Mycobutin is the only drug available in the United States for the prevention of disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), the fastest growing bacterial opportunistic infection (0I) in people with HIV. By the year 2000, 90 million new cases of TB and 30 million deaths are expected worldwide, according to a recent report in the Journal of the American Medical Association, the company noted.
