Response of HIV RNA to ddI Predictive of Survival

In patients treated with didanosine (ddI), changes in viremia at one month after initiation of therapy predict survival independently of initial AIDS diagnosis and initial CD4 count, according to a report from Switzerland.

The benefits of treatment for HIV-positive persons diminish with time and there has been much concern in case development of viral resistance limits the effectiveness of antiretroviral drugs.

In an earlier study researcher Sabine Yerly and colleagues showed that in a group of 14 ddI-treated patients, a fall in viremia in the first month of therapy predicts a persisting decrease in viremia for the following year.
