Fluconazole Reduces Fungal Infections in AIDS Patients

The antifungal agent fluconazole, given as prophylaxis, reduces the frequency of cryptococcosis, esophageal candidiasis, and superficial fungal infections in HIV-infected patients with low CD4 counts, according to a report from the NIAID AIDS Clinical Trials Group.

Invasive fungal infections, especially with Cryptococcus neoformans, occur in 5 to 10 percent of patients with AIDS. In addition, mucocutaneous candidiasis is almost ubiquitous in patients with advanced HIV disease, and recurrent infection causes considerable morbidity.
