Liver Biopsy Useful in Determining Infection

Liver biopsy is a powerful tool for the rapid diagnosis of infection in HIV-infected patients who have unexplained fever and abnormal liver function test results, according to a report from France's Institut Pasteur.

Hepatobiliary diseases occur frequently in patients with HIV infection. These diseases include chronic hepatitis B, C, and delta hepatitis; malignancies (lymphoma and Kaposi's sarcoma); infectious HIV-related sclerosing cholangitis or acalculous cholecystitis; and liver infections due to opportunistic microorganisms. In addition, steatosis and granulomas can occur.
