Hypericin Profile To Potentially Include Hepatitis C and HIV

VIMRx Pharmaceuticals Inc., Stamford, Connecticut, announced that its program to develop hypericin, its lead antiviral/antiretroviral compound, to inactivate viruses in blood used for transfusions is yielding encouraging data which broaden the antiviral profile to potentially include hepatitis C as well as HIV.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infects about 200,000 people in the United States each year. Seventy-90 percent of these infections become chronic, thus 140,000 to 180,000 Americans become chronic carriers annually. These chronic infections carry a high risk of development of cirrhosis and liver cancer which appear later in life.
