Governor's HIV/AIDS Committee May Continue Without Funds

The Hawaii Governor's Committee on HIV/AIDS has offered to continue its advisory role on a voluntary basis if its funding is cut.

The panel met in an emergency meeting to discuss looming state budget cuts that may take away its funding.

It now receives $94,703 a year and has two paid staff people and 22 volunteers.

The committee sets policy, coordinates services and develops legislation to help the government and community deal with the spreading disease.

Budget cuts also could take away five percent of state money spent for HIV/AIDS services to communities.
