Medical Marijuana Bill Passes First Test

California patients with AIDS, cancer and other serious medical conditions would be allowed to use marijuana to ease their pain under a bill approved by a legislative committee.

The Assembly Public Safety Committee backed a measure by Assemblyman John Vasconcellos, Democrat-Santa Clara, California, would allow licensed doctors to approve the illegal drug to aid people with four severe health problems.

Residents with AIDS, cancer, glaucoma and multiple sclerosis (MS) would all be permitted to grow and use marijuana as part of prescribed medical treatment.
