More Females Becoming Infected with HIV

Increasingly, the faces of AIDS in Arkansas belong to women and teenage girls.

Nearly a quarter of Arkansas' newly diagnosed HIV-positive patients are women, representing a "very sad, alarming increase" in the spread of HIV among heterosexuals, said Dr. Carolyn Beverly, medical director for the state Health Department's Division of AIDS and Sexually-Transmitted Disease (STD).

The increase in the number of female cases is statewide, said Jan Bunch, the administrator of the state Health Department's AIDS Surveillance Program. Most new cases are in women aged 20 to 29, she said.
