According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 7th European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, held March 26-30, 1995, in Vienna, Austria, "Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major cause of parenterally transmitted non-A non-B hepatitis and may lead to chronic liver disease, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Different genotypes have been proposed on the basis of sequence dissimilarities between strains identified from different parts of the world.
