Stem Cell Factor Offers Insight Into HIV Progression

Stem cell factor is upregulated during early stages of HIV infection, decreases with disease progression, and may be clinically useful in the treatment of AIDS, according to a report from Germany.

Cytopenia is common in HIV, as are neutropenia, lymphopenia, and thrombocytopenia. Dysfunction of the bone marrow stroma has been suggested as a possible mechanism. One of the stroma-derived cytokines, stem cell factor (SCF), has recently been identified as a multipotential growth factor that acts on early hematopoietic progenitor cells of various lineages.
