Primary HIV infection results in a symptomatic illness in 60-70 percent of individuals. This symptomatic phase is characterized by high levels of infectious HIV in plasma and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and a T-cell lymphopenia that affects both CD4 and CD8 subsets.
