T-Cell-Subset Enumeration Marker of HIV

T-cell-subset enumeration may be useful in the diagnosis of primary HIV infection, according to a study from Australia.

Primary HIV infection results in a symptomatic illness in 60-70 percent of individuals. This symptomatic phase is characterized by high levels of infectious HIV in plasma and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and a T-cell lymphopenia that affects both CD4 and CD8 subsets. It has not yet been determined whether any particular subset of CD4 cell is preferentially depleted at this stage, although HIV preferentially infects activated or "memory" CD4 T lymphocytes in vitro (i.e. those expressing the CD4RO isoform).
