MHC-Related Immune Factors May Influence AIDS Progression

Immunogenetic factors determined by the major histocompatibility complex may affect the rate of HIV-1 progression and may influence the development of specific AIDS-defining illness such as Kaposi's sarcoma, according to research conducted at Boston's Tufts University.

It has been suggested that genetic factors influence the interaction of the host with HIV-1 and the evolution and manifestations of AIDS.

"Specific human leukocyte antigen (HLA) allotypes have been proposed as genetic markers for the rate of progression to symptomatic disease and AIDS and the development of specific AIDS-related outcomes, especially Kaposi's sarcoma," researcher J.P.A....
