Risk of Sepsis Directly Related to CD4 Cell Count

Bacterial sepsis is a frequent and serious complication of HIV infection in children, and the risk increases with a CD4 cell count decrease.

HIV-infected children may develop a humoral deficiency characterized by abnormal antibody response to antigens and mitogens and polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia. Qualitative functional defects in leukocyte function and imbalance of cytokine secretion may also be present.
