"Immune Mechanisms Induced by FIV Vaccination: Implications for HIV Vaccine Development."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the International Symposium on Clinical Immunology, held July 20-23, 1995, in San Francisco, California, "Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infection in cats induces a chronic and progressive depletion of CD4+ peripheral lymphocytes resulting in impaired immune responsiveness and function. Disease progression and pathology of FIV induced immunodeficiency is similar to that observed in HIV infected humans suggesting that FIV may be a valuable small animal model for the study of AIDS and HIV vaccine development.
