HIV+ Should Routinely Undergo PPD Testing

Tuberculin skin testing should be conducted immediately following the determination of HIV positivity, according to a newly-released quality standard from Chicago's Northwestern University and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

"In adults and adolescents, reactivation tuberculosis can occur at any time during HIV infection, regardless of the CD4 lymphocyte count," researcher John P. Phair and colleagues wrote ("Quality Standard for the Identification and Treatment of Persons Coinfected with HIV and M. tuberculosis," Clinical Infectious Diseases, August 1995;21(suppl 1):S130-131).
