Lifelong TB Prophylaxis May be Needed in Endemic Areas

The value of fixed-duration tuberculosis preventive therapy may be limited in developing areas where TB is endemic, according to an official with the World Health Organization (WHO).

Richard O'Brien of WHO's Global TB Program said this is certainly the case with regard to HIV positive persons in developing countries with dual infection.

"Giving life-long isoniazid preventive therapy just makes sense," O'Brien said in a presentation delivered at The Lancet Conference 1995, "The Challenge of Tuberculosis," held in Washington D.C., September 14 and 15.
