AIDS Therapies (Saquinavir)

Approval Recommended for First in New Class of Therapies

The Antiviral Drugs Advisory Committee of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommended approval for Invirase (saquinavir) - the first compound in a new class of AIDS therapies called proteinase (or protease) inhibitors. The last time the FDA recommended approval for a compound from a new class of AIDS therapies was in 1987 (AZT).

Studies show that Invirase can work together with conventional HIV therapies - nucleoside analogues such as AZT (ZDV) and HIVID (ddC) - but has fewer side effects and is well tolerated by patients.
