CDC Says TMP-SMX Useful in HIV+ Africans with TB

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study from Africa suggests that chemoprophylaxis with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole is beneficial in HIV infected tuberculosis patients.

Since 1990, the prevalence of HIV infection among the approximately 4000 persons diagnosed annually with tuberculosis in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire has ranged from 45- to 47 percent. An autopsy study conducted in Abidjan in 1991 showed that tuberculosis was the primary cause of death in 32 percent of HIV infected persons.
