Monotherapy Demonstrates Potent Antiviral Effects

Monotherapy with the experimental protease inhibitor ritonavir (formerly known as ABT-538) significantly reduced plasma viremia and elevated CD4 lymphocyte counts in HIV infected people, according to a new multi-center study published in the December 7, 1995, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

"Ritonavir monotherapy appears to be well-tolerated and is associated with potent antiviral effects and immunologic benefit in AIDS patients. Expanded clinical trials of ritonavir are needed," said Martin Markowitz, M.D., staff investigator at New York's Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center and principal author of the article.
