Needle Exchange Greatly Reduces HBV and HCV

Needle exchange programs can significantly reduce hepatitis B and C infection in high-risk injection drug users, according to a report from Washington state's Seattle-King County Department of Health.

Each year, approximately 200,000 to 300,000 hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections and 150,000 hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections occur in the United States. Injection drug users are among those at highest risk for both types of viral hepatitis.
