Indonesia Rules Out Providing Condoms In Hotels

An Indonesian tourism official has ruled out providing condoms at hotels to curb the spread of HIV, saying it would create the impression prostitution had been legalized, the official Antara news agency reported.

"The giving out of condoms - as part of the effort to prevent the spread of HIV infection - by hotel operators could create the impression that prostitution is legal," Andi Mappi Sameng, director-general of tourism, was quoted as saying.

"But we have to understand that our nation still strongly holds religious and cultural norms, so providing condoms in hotel rooms would give a bad impression," he said.
