Challenges Remain After 200 Years

Health officials and children's advocates have come together to mark the 200th anniversary of one of the world's greatest medical discoveries - the creation of vaccine to combat disease.

In the two centuries since the discovery of smallpox vaccine by British doctor Edward Jenner, vaccination has controlled nine major diseases including smallpox, yellow fever, mumps and rubella.

"Because of vaccines, eight out of every ten children in the world are now protected from six deadly childhood diseases - measles, tuberculosis, tetanus, diphtheria, whooping cough and polio," said Carol Bellamy, executive director of the United Nations Children's Fund...
