"Tumor Suppressor p53 Expression is Associated with HIV Disease Progression: Implications for Immunopathogenesis."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 3rd Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections, held January 28 - February 1, 1996, in Washington, DC, "Several studies have suggested that HIV infection, in vivo and in vitro, is associated with apoptosis in select T-cell populations, accounting for the depletion of these critical immune effectors and contributing to the pathogenesis of AIDS. These studies were limited by the requirement that cells be placed in tissue culture prior to the evaluation of apoptosis.
