U.N. Warning Over HIV in Southern African Armies

HIV is up to three times more common among soldiers in eastern and southern Africa than among civilians in the region, a Malawian newspaper reported on February 15, 1996.

The Daily Times quoted Stuart Kingma, an official working for a joint U.N. program on AIDS prevention, as saying he was worried about the high rate of infection among members of armed forces in the region.

"The general situation in the military is quite bad in countries like Congo, Uganda, Gabon, Kenya and Zimbabwe," he said.
