250,000 AIDS Patients To Die from Tuberculosis in '96

Tuberculosis (TB) has become the leading cause of death among people infected with HIV and is expected to kill 250,000 in 1996, the United Nations (U.N.) said.

Dr. Peter Piot, executive director of the U.N. inter-agency program on AIDS, warned of the growing danger of the dual epidemics. Dr. Paul Nunn, TB expert at the World Health Organization (WHO), said the combination was potentially catastrophic in Asia, particularly in India and Thailand, where a large rise in deaths could be expected in the next years.
