In animals, the bone marrow serves as a reservoir for lentiviruses, the family of viruses that includes HIV-1. However, the incidence and extent of bone marrow infection with HIV-1 in vivo is not known. Using in-situ hybridization (ISH) for viral RNA, we have previously shown that only 16% of bone marrow biopsies of patients with end-stage AIDS demonstrated active viral infection.
