U.N. Report Warns of AIDS Threat to South Pacific

AIDS is predicted to sweep through South Pacific nations unless culturally conservative and devoutly Christian islanders lift age-old taboos on safe sex education, a United Nations (U.N.) report says.

The report, released in Fiji, said 22 island countries and territories face a potential AIDS pandemic, which could have "appalling consequences" for their seven million people. The report, produced by several U.N. agencies, said the South Pacific was one of few places currently without a significant AIDS problem, but this could change quickly.

By June 1995 only 234 AIDS cases in the South Pacific had been reported to the World Health Organization (WHO)...
