No Serious Hematologic Sequelae of Infection Found in Hemophiliacs

The screening of blood products for the presence of parvovirus B19 is not justified for hemophiliacs who are B19 seronegative or HIV infected, researchers report.

M.V. Ragni, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and colleagues studied the presence of parvovirus B19 IgG and IgM and B19 DNA in both HIV positive and HIV negative hemophiliacs ("Parvovirus B19 Infection in Patients with Hemophilia," Transfusion, March 1996;36(3):238-241). They compared their findings with the clinical, laboratory and blood product usage data for these patients.
