"The Novel Herpesvirus-Like DNA Sequences Detected in Kaposi's Sarcoma Correlate with an Infectious Agent."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 87th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research, held April 20-24, 1996, in Washington, D.C., "Objective: To determine whether the Kaposi's sarcoma (KS)-associated novel gamma-herpesvirus-like DNA sequences are associated with an infectious agent. Methods: Diagnostic polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the presence of the novel herpesvirus DNA sequences was performed according to Chang et al. (Science 266:1865;1994). We refer to this putative virus as human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8). HHV8 PCR positive CD19+ cells from HIV seropositive KS patient peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC)...
