U.S. House Bill Passed Requiring HIV Test for Infants

The U.S. House passed a compromise bill which would give states the chance to cut the rate of HIV transmission or demonstrate the efficacy of voluntary pre-natal testing before requiring mandatory HIV testing of infants.

The HIV testing provision was part of a compromise House-Senate bill extending the Ryan White CARE act for five years. It passed 402 to 4 - the opponents were Republicans - and was sent to the Senate where it was expected to enjoy wide support.

The bill, named after an Indiana teenager who died after contracting HIV from a blood transfusion, has authorized billions of dollars to state and local governments to care for AIDS patients...
