HIV Infected AIDS-Free Survival Improved/Long-Term Prognosis Poor

AIDS-free survival in persons infected with HIV-1 who have CD4 cell counts less than 350 per cubic milliliter has improved since antiviral agents became available. But a multicenter team has found that the long-term prognosis in this patient population remains poor.

The analysis stems from a prospective cohort study conducted by Dr. Cheryl Enger and associates at Johns Hopkins, Baltimore, Maryland, and other U.S. centers. The subjects were homosexual men participating in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (JAMA 1996;275:1329-1334).
