Pharmaceutical Companies Issue Warning

Some AIDS patients are risking their health by taking an untested combination of two drugs and should wait for the results of tests aimed at finding a safe combined dose, the manufacturers said.

"The message is, don't do this on your own. Wait till more data's available," Daniel Berman, Hoffmann-LaRoche, Nutley, New Jersey, said. Saquinavir and ritonavir are part of a class of drugs that inhibit protease, an enzyme needed in the reproduction of HIV.

Hoffmann-LaRoche makes Invirase, the brand name for saquinavir, which was approved for sale by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in December 1995. The other drug, sold as Norvir, was approved...
