Kaposi's sarcoma

HHV-8 Linked with KS in Various Patient Populations

Human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8) may contribute to the pathogenesis of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) directly or indirectly, according to a team of Belgian researchers.

The results of a study on HHV-8 and KS by Dr. J.C. Noel of Erasme University Hospital in Brussels, Belgium, and colleagues were published in the May 15, 1996 issue of Cancer (Cancer 1996;77:2132-2136.

Noel determined the frequency of HHV-8 DNA sequences in 78 KS samples from patients with various types of KS, including KS associated with AIDS and with immunosuppressive drugs. Samples were also included from patients in different stages of KS or different histologic variants.
