HIV Quantification Provides Therapeutic Insights

Advances in the understanding of HIV burden, dynamics, and resistance have afforded an opportunity to reevaluate approaches to HIV therapy development, according to two AIDS researchers at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD).

Drs. Diane V. Havlir and Douglas D. Richman reviewed implications of these advances in an update that appeared in the June 1, 1996, issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine (Ann Intern Med 1996;1224:984-994). We now know that there exists "... a dynamic equilibrium between HIV production and clearance even during the period of clinical latency, which may permit resistant virus to emerge with the imposition of drug pressure," they...
