'Survivor Treatment Selection Bias' Encumbers AIDS Studies

"Survivor treatment selection bias is an important potential limitation of the analysis of observational treatment studies," suggested researchers at Johns Hopkins, Baltimore, Maryland.

Although the "gold standard" of treatment evaluation is the randomized, clinical trial, randomized clinical trials are not always possible for ethical and economic reasons. In an issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine (Ann Intern Med 1996;124:999-1005), Dr. Marshall J. Glesby explained the potential hazards of the bias associated with observational treatment studies, which he said are often overlooked.
