Test Phase Entered To Identify Survivors in HIV Population

Hemagen Diagnostics, Inc., Waltham, Massachusetts, and Sheffield Medical Technologies reported they have entered the third and final development phase of a test to detect HIV positive individuals who are not likely to develop AIDS.

The test is based on a discovery by Dr. Jean-Claude Chermann, a French virologist who was one of the co-discoverers of HIV. Dr. Ricardo de Oliveira, Hemagen, said the test - known as an immunoassay - has been scheduled to undergo extensive clinical trials at centers of AIDS research in Marseille, France, and Sao Paulo, Brazil. The assay detects an antibody which Chermann has reported appears in virtually all of the 5 to 10 percent of HIV...
