In 1995, there were 1,385 diagnosed cases of the disease in Rhode Island, according to the Health Department. Half of those with AIDS were heterosexuals, including intravenous drug users.
Of heterosexuals with AIDS, 38 percent were IV drug users. The rest got the disease from heterosexual contact.
