AIDS Increasing Among Rhode Island Heterosexuals

The rate of AIDS has increased among heterosexuals in Rhode Island, matching the number of those who got the disease from homosexual contact, the Rhode Island Health Department said.

In 1995, there were 1,385 diagnosed cases of the disease in Rhode Island, according to the Health Department. Half of those with AIDS were heterosexuals, including intravenous drug users.

Of heterosexuals with AIDS, 38 percent were IV drug users. The rest got the disease from heterosexual contact.

Another 2,559 people in 1995 tested positive for HIV. Of those, 41 percent were IV drug users, 21 percent got the disease from heterosexual contact, 21...
