UCSF Researchers Link Virus to KS Pathogenesis

A test developed by researchers at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) has implicated HHV-8 in the development of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS).

The results, which were presented in the August 1996 issue of Nature Medicine, has raised hopes that KS might be prevented if effective drugs or vaccines can be identified or developed to counter human herpes virus 8 (HHV-8), a virus that is detectable in KS tumors (Nature Medicine 1996;2:862-863,918-928). The researchers developed a blood test for HHV-8 infection based on detection of immune antibodies to the virus, and then analyzed blood from 913 individuals, including 528 who were HIV positive and 385 who were HIV...
