Physicians Should Take Advocacy Role To Protect Children from HIV

Pediatricians who care for children of HIV positive mothers are taking an aggressive role in protecting the health of the child, according to an editorial in the July 27, 1996, issue of the Lancet (Lancet 1996;348:247-249).

Drs. Christopher Duke and Ilya Z. Kovar at Children's and Westminster Hospital, London, United Kingdom, outlined the current dilemma of pediatricians who must make treatment decisions that involve conflicting legal and ethical implications. "At issue is whether the protection of one party's rights permits violation of the other's," they wrote.

A "culture of choice" is the prevailing practice in their hospital's maternity...
