According to the authors' abstract of an article published in Annals of Internal Medicine, "Background: Cytomegalovirus retinitis remains a major cause of illness in patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), and existing therapies for this condition are relatively ineffective and toxic. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of intravitreous cidofovir injections alone for initial and maintenance therapy for cytomegalovirus retinitis.
