Treatment Improves HIV Associated Nephropathy

"Prednisone improves serum creatinine and proteinuria in a substantial proportion of adults with HIV associated nephropathy," according to a report in the July 1996 issue of the American Journal of Medicine (Am J Med 1996;101:41-48).

Dr. Michael C. Smith, University Hospitals of Cleveland, Ohio, and colleagues believe that the corticosteroid-related side effects of prednisone treatment do not prohibit its use in HIV positive patients with nephropathy. In 19 consecutive patients diagnosed with HIV associated nephropathy, Smith administered prednisone at 60 mg/d for two to 11 weeks. This was followed by a tapering course of prednisone over two to 26 weeks.
