MAC in HIV Positive Patients: Three-Drug Regimen Superior

Canadian researchers have confirmed results of previous studies that three drugs are efficacious in treatment of Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) bacteremia in AIDS patients.

Dr. Stephen D. Shafran, University of Alberta at Edmonton, Canada, and colleagues reported in the August 8, 1996, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine that the three-drug combination regimen of clarithromycin, rifabutin and ethambutol "... leads to resolution of the bacteremia more frequently and more rapidly than treatment with rifampin, ethambutol, clofazimine, and ciprofloxacin," Survival rates were better in patients who received the three-drug regimen in Shafran's study (N Engl...
