Fecal TNF-Alpha Implicated in HIV Related Diarrhea

Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) "... may have a role in the pathogenesis of bacterial microsporidial and CMV]-related diarrhea in HIV seropositive individuals," according to a group of London, United Kingdom-based researchers.

Dr. Daniel R. Sharpstone and his colleagues at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital suggests that "... anti-TNF-alpha agents may have a therapeutic role in the management of these conditions," (AIDS 1996;10:989-994). The investigators evaluated stool samples of 204 patients with HIV related diarrhea for fecal TNF-alpha, a pro-inflammatory cytokine associated with weight loss, intestinal inflammation, diarrhea and other features of AIDS...
